Emergency Crews Respond to Unknown Odor

Frederick County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) sounded tones at 5:18 p.m. on April 14, 2015 for an unknown odor inside The Learning Bee day care facility on River Run Road in Waterside. While en-route Frederick Emergency Communications Center advised responding units that there were multiple patients, and an EMS Task Force was dispatched.

Walkersville Volunteer Fire Company’s Engine 111 (E111) arrived on the scene and began investigating. Engine 23 arrived on scene and took position at the hydrant, and it’s crew assisted E111 crew with investigating. Ambulance 248 arrived on the scene and reported to command.

Command advised ECC that approximately thirty adults and children had been in the building. A248, C11-1 and Medic2 were assigned EMS division.

The investigation crews could not find any signs off carbon monoxide or any other gases. A strong odor was present in the building. Command requested a hazmat crew to be dispatched to the scene to assist with the investigation.

Ambulances 247, 249, 18, 19, 28, 38, and 39 were on scene to assist with EMS care to thirty adults and children. Ambulances 248 and 38 both transported patients to Frederick Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

Special Ops 50, Decon 33, and Special Ops33 arrived to assist with finding the cause of the strong odor.

After several hours, crews determined that one of the adults in the daycare facility threw a pepper spray aerosol can in a trash can. The aerosol can broke and caused the odor.
